Dr Ruth Nabisere is a second year post graduate trainee and an ENRICH Master’s fellow. She is pursuing a Master of Medicine in Pediatrics and Child health at Makerere University, College of Health Sciences, where she will be conducting her research. Following her Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery from Makerere University, she pursued a Master’s degree in Public Health from University of Leeds in 2017/2018. In 2020, she received a Fogarty fellowship award to conduct research describing the UGT 1A1 polymorphisms among HIV infected patients on TB treatment in Uganda and understanding the effect of these polymorphisms on dolutegravir pharmacokinetics in this population. Prior to her enrolment into postgraduate studies, she was working as a clinical trial coordinator at the Infectious diseases Institute where she was coordinated a number of studies among Tuberculosis and HIV infected individuals. Her current research is focusing on investigating delayed puberty among adolescents with sickle cell disease (SCD) at the Mulago Sickle Cell Clinic, Mulago National Referral and Teaching Hospital. Using an individually matched case-control design, the study will examine the sociodemographic and clinical, risk factors associated with delayed puberty in this population, alongside its association with adolescents’ self-image. This work aims to generate locally relevant evidence on an underexplored complication of sickle cell disease, with the goal of informing earlier identification and holistic management of pubertal and psychosocial challenges facing adolescents living with SCD in resource-constrained settings.
