ENRICH is a training grant funded by the National Institute of Health. It is a five-year grant with a collaborative effort of multiple Principal Investigators from Makerere University under the department of Paediatrics and child health.
Challenges still exist, for example, the community and district facilities where many Ugandan children are born cannot provide comprehensive services, including newborn screening. Another issue: the risk of SCD complications related to kidneys, lungs, heart—almost all organs—grows higher as patients grow older, yet scientific research in Uganda hasn’t caught up with the reality of these longer lives. As a result, teens and adults with SCD don’t get “the care they deserve”.
It’s very painful for us pediatricians to see our patients encounter challenges and problems when they transition to adult care.
Awarded in 2023, ENRICH program seeks to enhance human resources and research capacity for SCD-associated NCDs in Uganda. It is anticipated that by the end of the 5-years support, a critical mass of local research scientists will have been trained to support the further growth of a high quality SCD-associated NCDs research and a clinical care portfolio, focused on low-cost sustainable interventions for SCD-affected populations, will have been created.
