NIH D43 NCD Conference (July 2024)

We have continued to participate in stakeholder engagements for SCD.  Following the stakeholders’ engagement held in 2023, the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University has supported us to establish a Centre of Excellence for SCD and other Neglected Tropical Diseases at Makerere University. We are planning how this center will function, but its main activities will be in areas of capacity building, research and community engagement. We have supported activities of SCD patient groups and have held engagements with the Ministry of health, and other stakeholders at the universities. We are planning for activities to engage school leaders, students and other stakeholders in sensitization activities early next year. We also participated in the NIH Conference for D43 grants for NCDs in July this year.

Other Aims

Aim 1

To train a multi-disciplinary team of research scientists
with expertise to assess the magnitude; pathophysiology, interventions for prevention, treatment, and control of SCD and related NCDs across the lifespan. This will be achieved through degree related long research training to increase the number of researchers working on SCD associated NCDs as per national and regional research priority areas.

Aim 2

To increase SCD and associated NCD research capacity across the lifespan

We shall conduct a series of short courses and workshops on various aspects of SCD associated NCD research, targeting faculty and students from health professional training institutions in Uganda, as well as health workers in hospitals and other health facilities.
